An artist's creation is inseparable from the cultural nourishment and pursuit of his own growth. Since the oil painting which originated in the West spread to China, some excellent oil painters in China have consciously combined the practice and studying the West oil painting with local culture to reflect the spirit of local culture and integrate local artistic features.

In today's era of globalization and internationalization, it is more necessary to highlight the regional and national characteristics of culture, or the richness of global culture will be lost. Therefore, oil painting as a kind of foreign art variety,  the questions of how to integrate it with national culture and further create oil painting artworks with Chinese characteristics, is the historic and unique topic and mission that Chinese oil painters are constantly thinking of and exploring for.

Xu Li is such a conscious practitioner of this topic. As a contemporary oil painting artist, Xu Li early paid much attention to this topic in his artistic practice, and keenly used local cultural resources to establish distinctive personal artistic features that he has achieved remarkable artistic achievements.

Xu Li is also an oil painter who has the courage to create and dare to practice. He combines the noumenal language characteristics of oil painting art with the techniques of traditional Chinese painting art. What's more, he applied two completely different artistic expression techniques of our traditional paintings (fine and freehand brushwork) to his two different types of works that formed two completely different artistic features.

In his series of Buddhist works based on ethnic religions, he absorbed and carried forward the artistic characteristics of Chinese meticulous paintings with line shapes and decorative features, and combined with the treatment of texture and color in oil painting, which enhanced the unique artistic expression and appealed. In his some other artworks with the theme of landscape,  he adopted the features of freehand brushwork of Chinese ink painting, and borrowed the rules, layout, realm, and rhyme of traditional landscape paintings. At the same time, he presented the language features and modern aesthetics of oil painting in the performance of painting.

His explorations and achievements which blend of Chinese and foreign arts have become a unique flower in the Chinese oil painting art garden, which is loved by the domestic and abroad audience.

Wish Xu Li's flower of oil painting art is getting brighter and brighter!
